Word Work: Phonics & Spelling

Word Work at Blue Horizons connects phonics, spelling, decoding, and written language so students understand how words work, not just how to memorize them.

Phonics and spelling are taught together because reading and writing rely on the same sound-symbol patterns. As students decode words in reading and apply those same patterns in spelling, they build stronger fluency, accuracy, memory, and independence.

Our spelling approach emphasizes long-term retention rather than short-term memorization. Instead of simply studying a weekly list and moving on, students receive five new spelling words each week. Their weekly spelling test includes ten words: the five new words plus five “surprise” words randomly selected from previous weeks. This encourages students to truly learn spelling patterns and retain them over time.

For phonics instruction, Blue Horizons uses UFLI Foundations, a systematic program developed by the University of Florida Literacy Institute, to build strong foundational decoding skills. When needed, we also supplement with the REWARDS Reading program to reinforce more advanced decoding, fluency, and comprehension strategies.

Hands-on practice is an important part of our Word Work instruction. Students build words with letter tiles, rearrange letters to create new words, sort words by spelling pattern, and record their work in notebooks they can return to throughout the year. This helps students recognize patterns, strengthen memory, and use spelling as a tool for reading and writing.

Through this connected approach, students do more than memorize words for a weekly quiz. They learn to read, spell, write, and think about language with greater confidence and understanding.
