At Blue Horizons, literature is taught as a way to build vocabulary, comprehension, cultural literacy, and a lifelong love of books. Students read and discuss carefully selected stories, fables, folktales, poetry, rich nonfiction, and high-quality children’s literature.

Our literature program draws primarily from the Core Knowledge Foundation’s carefully sequenced selections, with additional trade books chosen from Cengage/National Geographic’s Reach for Reading series. These texts expose students to classic stories, meaningful nonfiction, multicultural perspectives, and language that stretches their thinking.

Guided reading is provided in a variety of teacher-led formats, while students also have opportunities for group discussion and peer-led conversation. Vocabulary is developed through rich discussion, context clues, word study, and regular dictionary use.

Daily teacher read-alouds introduce students to complex language and ideas beyond their independent reading level. Dedicated independent reading time encourages students to read for pleasure, build stamina, and grow into confident, capable readers.

This balanced approach supports decoding, fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and deep engagement with books while helping students grow into joyful, capable readers.
