Literature

The literature program draws primarily from the Core Knowledge Foundation’s carefully sequenced selections, introducing students to classic stories, fables, folktales, poetry, and rich nonfiction texts that build cultural literacy. To supplement, additional high-quality trade books are selected from Cengage/National Geographic’s Reach for Reading series, providing engaging nonfiction and multicultural perspectives. Guided reading is implemented in a variety of teacher-led formats, while also allowing students to discuss on their own in a variety of group settings and peer-led discussions. Vocabulary is developed through rich discussion, context-based exploration, and regular dictionary use, helping students build word knowledge and independence. Daily teacher read-alouds expose students to complex language and ideas beyond their current reading level, while dedicated time for independent reading encourages reading for pleasure and develops stamina. This balanced approach builds decoding, comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency skills while fostering a lifelong love of books.
